The First House Hunt in Niagara!

As previously announced my husband and I will be making a move to the Niagara Region of Ontario soon and we will be looking to purchase a house. We had a trip to Toronto planned already, before the news of the move, so we decided to take detour and spend a couple of nights checking out St. Catharines and Niagara on the Lake. Of course we would love to live in NOTL but it's just to expensive for our modest budget with the average house price at about 1 million dollars! The city of St. Catharines is an awesome option, it's right next door to wine country and the homes there are a little less expensive...although more than we are used to here in Corner Brook, NL.

So on a 30 degree sunny Saturday we met with our amazing agent, Viktoria, who even in her state of "about to pop" pregnancy was kind enough to spend her entire day showing us some houses available within our budget. Needless to say we were a little underwhelmed and sticker shocked. The photo below is typical of what we will be able to purchase, a not so large, mid century brick bungalow that is in need of renovations, ouch!

Steve and I are no strangers to renovations, it's just that we are not used to having to over pay for a house that has not been updated. We figured we would be able to find something that is move in ready. My plan was to move in, paint, furnish and then spend the remainder of our free time sipping wine and craft beer by the pool.....bahahaa....what a pipe dream!

We did view one house that we kind of liked with some mediocre updates and we really thought hard about putting in an offer. I think we were blinded by the pool! The renovations were just OK, the location wasn't ideal and the bathroom still needed a gut job. The house was listed at get this...$499k. At the end of the day Viktoria treated us to dinner and wine at Henry of Pelham Vineyards and for that we are very thankful. It truly calmed our minds and allowed us to take a step back and get a better perspective on things. We have decided to take our time and wait for the right opportunity to come along. There will always be another house and hopefully it will be the perfect new happy place for us. Let the house hunting continue.
